The reason why I’m so fascinated with World War Two is because none of it makes any sense. You could be an english teacher one day, in the case of Captain Miller from Saving Private Ryan, and a sergeant the next. When you read about the tactics the military employed it’s hard to comprehend that these men didn’t train for combat their entire lives.

The other surreal aspect of World War Two is the scale of death that was experienced by both military personnel and civilians. Thousands of lives were taken on a daily basis. The U.S.S. Arizona Memorial pays tribute to this fact in a really powerful way. Many military personnel that survived the Pearl Harbor attack have their remains laid to rest at the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial after they pass. The memorial pays tribute to those that died in 1941 as well as those whose remains were buried there decades later. Although the site memorializes a horrible moment in America’s history, it’s also incredibly beautiful. I’m very grateful that I got the chance to visit the site in person.
